S&P/TSX composite down in late-morning trading, U.S. stocks also lower

TORONTO - Canada's main stock index was down in late-morning trading as stocks in the telecom and technology sectors fell, while U.S. stock markets also moved lower.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 72.28 points at 25,462.21.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 228.90 points at 44,518.73. The S&P 500 index was down 32.35 points at 6,051.22, while the Nasdaq composite was down 184.29 points at 19,607.70.

The ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø dollar traded for 69.89 cents US compared with 69.82 cents US on Thursday.

The March crude oil contract was up 24 cents at US$70.85 per barrel and the March natural gas contract was down four cents at US$3.37 per mmBTU.

The April gold contract was up US$25.00 at US$2,901.70 an ounce and the March copper contract was up 14 cents at US$4.60 a pound.
